I'm only one step away...

Considering my love for this band, and the name of this blog in particular, I felt it necessary to post this video.

This is the full set played by Trial at the festival celebrating the release of the book studying the era of hardcore in the 1990s, entitled 'Burning Fight'. The show took place this weekend just gone. I wish I'd fucking gone...

In a genre which is extremely easy to satirise, manipulate for a sense of self worth and often use as a catalyst for violence, Trial will always be 'that' band who make hardcore a respectable genre of music, especially as it seems as time goes on, fewer and fewer people genuinely exemplify the values of unity, self worth and consideration for other beings, which they're all too happy to rave about when they can be bothered. Trial are still a vegan straight edge band who possess the political views they did when they began, and their songs are still as meaningful and as important to the genre as they were when they released their most recent material, a decade ago.

THE RETURN OF...

After a long and highly unprecedented break from posting, I now have the internet set up at our new flat, accompanied with a personal computer of my own, so I can utilise the net without jacking Gary's.

Not much has changed, aside from I went to The Lakes in Cumbria over Easter with my Dad, my sister, Ellie, and the dog, Grace. I probably took more 'good' photos in the 7 days I was up there than in my entire life.

They're all on my hard drive, so when I get a better opportunity (don't hold your breath) I'll upload a decent amount. Until then, here's me, about to walk up a rock face, footed by a very very metal tree. O)))

It's worth mentioning we were hopelessly lost at this point as well...

Getting a personal computer also means having my own iTunes, which meant having no social life for the first week of returning online, obtaining 5000 songs in 5 days. Long live the internet.

Current playlist:

Russian Circles - Russian Circles
Sourvein - Emerald Vulture
Quicksand - Slip
Goatsnake - Goatsnake I
Burning Witch - Crippled Lucifer
Nick Cave & Warren Ellis - The Proposition OST
Tha Alkaholiks - 21 & Over

Asbestosdeath - Dejection, Unclean
The Break In - Demo 2003

Earth - Pentastar: In The Style of Demons

William Elliott Whitmore - Hymns For The Hopeless
William Elliott Whitmore - Ashes To Dust
Trap Them - Seizures In A Barren Praise
Converge - The Poacher Diaries Split w/ ANB
Floor - Floor
Mind Eraser - Cave
Notorious B.I.G. - Ready To Die
Iron & Wine - The Creek Drank The Cradle
Hatred Surge - Hatred Surge
Dropdead - Discography
Cut The Shit - Harmed and Dangerous
Buzzov-en - At A Loss

Also that song 'Dog Days' by Florence & The Machine is really good. Looking forward to some sort of full length from her.

In other news, Dead Swans are currently in the States recording their full length for B9,
I go on tour in exactly two weeks (I'm FUCKING psyched), and listen to Alabaster Suns.

More to come soon.

Unnecessary break...

Past few weeks have been fairly busy, hence the lack of posting anything, at all, whatsoever.

I'm yet to gain a slot of time long enough to sift through photos to upload, despite xJimmyxFTWx666's requests, however some interesting stuff has happened over the past month.

If you've been living under a rock, you're likely to be unaware of this happening:

Official Press Release:

"
Bridge Nine has announced yet another signing for 2009 and this time, they went across the pond and signed up the Dead Swans from the UK for the label’s first ever worldwide deal with a band from overseas. Label Manager Karl Hensel said, “It’s been a goal of ours to work with a band from overseas for a long time. Bridge Nine is a global label, and there’s a lot of great hardcore from the UK and Europe and we recognize that. Dead Swans was a band that a few Bridge Nine bands tipped us off about, and after checking around, it was a very easy decision.”

Formed in 2006, Dead Swans have been making a name throughout the UK and Europe with a ferocious blend of hardcore that takes the musical influence from turn of the century Boston hardcore like American Nightmare and Right Brigade. They add a discordant melody and double bass metallic edge that, when combined with vocalist Nick Worthington’s strained voicebox abuse, creates a mix that has been garnering the Brighton, UK band global attention. As such, they have shared the stage and the road with a very impressive list of bands worldwide-from Bridge Nine’s Ruiner and Verse to Blacklisted, Integrity, Alexisonfire, Cancer Bats, and Gallows.

Dead Swans have been enjoying an incredible past 12 months, considering all they’ve released to date is a demo, the Southern Blue EP on Thirty Days Of Night, and a split 7” with Architects. In fall of 2008, the Dead Swans were nominated for a Kerrang! Award as the Best British Newcomer-which was both as surprising as it was flattering. As guitarist Stewart “Pid” Payne stated, “It was real strange- a hardcore band being shortlisted at Kerrang! Awards, but we went for the experience. We got to hang out with the guys in Cancer Bats and Gallows, we got to meet Metallica and we heckled abuse at anyone we felt deserved it. It was a night we won’t be forgetting soon”.

During March and April, the band will be touring the UK and Europe with This Is Hell and the Blackout Argument that will lead them into April, when the band will be entering the studio to record their debut full-length which will hit stores later in 2009. Payne stated, “We are real happy about signing to Bridge Nine. We all want to travel worldwide with this band and working with B9 is going to allow us to do this. On top of that, being part of a label that in our opinion has put out some of the best hardcore records ever is exciting!”

DEAD SWANS TOUR w/ THIS IS HELL & the Blackout Argument

Following the aforementioned Euro tour with This Is Hell, they're heading over to the States to record at GodCity Studios with Kurt Ballou, who's recorded a plethora of brilliant bands (see Shipwreck, Cave In, Blacklisted, Rise and Fall, Clouds, the list goes on...), and are jumping on a few shows while they're out their, including the New England Metal and Hardcore Fest.

Well done, basically. As with Dirty Money, I remember their first show (also at the infamous Tufnell Park Dome) less than 2 years ago. Good to see another UKHC band doing so well for themselves.

In other news, house hunting is GAY, and I need glasses.

Currently (still goes for some) rinsing the following...

Kings of Leon - Only By The Night
Minus The Bear - Highly Refined Pirates
Fleet Foxes - Sun Giant EP
Pressvre - Beasts EP
QOTSA - Songs For The Deaf
Red Sparowes - At The Soundless Dawn
Clouds - We Are Above You
Taint - Secrets and Lies
These Arms Are Snakes - Oxeneers Or The Lion Sleeps When Its Antelope Go
Zozobra - Bird of Prey

Will hopefully have some more time soon to upload photos!

Glory Days

Going through the files on this hard drive is awesome, I've come across some sick shows and hilarious photos of myself and people I used to and still do hang out with. Remember the Scavenger Hunt!? I think I'm gonna upload all the pics I have from that (which unfortunately isn't many) when I get a chance.
For now here are some photographic highlights of the period between when I got given a digital camera for my birthday at least 5 years ago, and now...

The woods next to a hostel we stayed in just outside Philadelphia, January 2007.

Stet's first show with Jailbait, June 2007.

This doesn't require, or warrant a caption. File under "Old / fucking hilarious".

Fighting Shit @ St Luke's Hall, Overton, sometime between 2004 and 2006. They played a show for the first time in so long the other day, in Iceland. I'd probably donate a kidney to see them return to the UK.

Tailbee playing a charity show with his old band Your Creation, in a pub in Whitchurch. Taken circa 2005/6.

Matt, doing what he does best, which is still to be determined. Taken circa 2007/8.

Path of Resistance @ Damage Control Fest, The Underworld, London, 1st May 2006. This was a fucking good show.

THE MFF. MF. Summer 2006, RECOGNISE.

Dirty Money's first show @ The Tufnell Park Dome, London, September 2006. They're currently touring the States with Trapped Under Ice and Reign Supreme. Insanity.

This is Chazz marking our last night in New York, when we went there with Charlotte, Finch, Myles and Theo in January 2007.

Looking through old pics is something I could do all night, I might upload a "best of the US" after being reminded of how fun that week was.

I've been listening to the following, a lot, since the beginning of 2009:

Taint - Secrets and Lies
Clouds - We Are Above You
Polar Bear Club - Sometimes Things Just Disappear
Zozobra - Harmonic Tremors
Zozobra - Bird of Prey
Trial - Through The Darkest Days
Trial - Are These Our Lives?
No Turning Back - Stronger
The Mongoloids - Time Trials
The Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde
The Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound
Kings of Leon - Only By The Night
Death Threat - Last Dayz
Big L - The Big Picture
Black Flag - My War
Fleet Foxes - The Ragged Wood
Fleet Foxes - Sun Giant EP
Inside Out - No Spiritual Surrender
Sabertooth Zombie - Midnight Venom

Recommend me anything that sounds like the above. More photos to come soon.

Merry New Year

I've been meaning to create one of these things for some time now, however have only just got round to it, new year seemed like a good enough time as any.

Anyone who's known me for a couple of years will know I used to take a lot of photos at hardcore shows.

They weren't necessarily any good, however I figured that instead of sitting on my hard drive, and some photobucket I can't even remember the link or password to, I could document some of said photos on here, for my own and other peoples' benefit, as I know there's nothing worse than going to a show full of kids flashing away all night at the front, for their photos to never see the light of day.

I'm sure that num
erous other posts will crop up in which I'll be broadcasting my feelings and how much I love / hate myself, depending on how self indulgent I'm feeling that day. I'll try to control it though...

It'll also be 'nice', I suppose, to rave on about whoever I've been listening to recently, as I'm sure half the time people I meet in person don't care, and I don't blame them! I can also rav
e on about how The Wire and Curb Your Enthusiasm are taking over my life.

I've literally just plugged my hard drive in, and came across the pics of the show Go It Alone played at Bar Monsta with Verse, Risky Business and Justice in Camden in April 2007. I'll upload a bunch more over the course of the next few days.

It's weird seeing how different everyone looks even just 2 years ago. Can see a couple of members of xDead Swansx in these, "before they were famous".

SPOT URSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go It Alone @ Bar Monsta, London, 28th April 2007.
